![]() ![]() The spreadsheet above illustrates how I have setup my virtual machines. I found it easiest to put the “gateway” virtual machine in the middle of my screen and the server and client on either side. From this starting point you need to designate one of your virtual machines as a client, one as a server and one as a gateway. To begin, start all of your three machines. The exercise assumes you have already created the three virtual machines and have installed them to their virtual hard disks are whichever you choose. To clarify, you need to make sure that your gateway will have two network interfaces. You need to make sure that the virtual machine use decide to use for the gateway has TWO network adapters.Virtualization software, I used Virtualbox from Oracle but others are available. ![]() A decent knowledge of Linux command line.– Don’t run live, take the time to install. Three persistent installations of Linux. The resources you will need for this exercise are listed below if you wish to follow along. Also included in this demonstration are a few bash scripts I made last week or so to automate some of the firewall rules and policies. Further into the demonstration I will try some iptables firewall rules on the gateway to simulate blocking an attacker. This demonstration involves the creation of two different networks to better simulate the gateway function. In this demonstration I am going to take a regular Debian Linux installation and turn it into a gateway making a virtual machine server and a client communicate through the gateway.
